restaurants underrated: Ratatouille La Gourmet.

hello you,

I've always given people the impression that I'm very high maintenance, but truth is, I'm really not! Okay, yes I love my designer bags and shoes, but when it comes to food it has always been the total opposite. People close to me would know how deeply obsessed I am with instant noodles and how mamak food will always be my first choice. Oh, and how can we ever forget Ramly burger? I will be doing a post specially dedicated to the Ramly burgers in JB, well it will more or less be like my tribute to Ramly burger. Ramly burger over any burger in the world. Ramly burger ayam/daging special, forever.

Sorry I digress, anyway, I will be doing a series (much like my cafe hopping series) on the underrated restaurants in JB. I already have a few in my list, so please stay tuned! I first discovered Ratatouille early this year (through JohorKaki blogpost about it) as a western food stall in a "kopitiam" in Taman Setia Indah. However, I never had the chance to visit it, would have been an experience to be having such amazing western cuisine in the setting of a coffee shop. A few weeks ago while I was bringing my baby brother for his mental math class in Adda Height, I came across a corner shop called Ratatouille as well. I mean, with a name like this, one can hardly miss out on it right? So I went to google about it again and boy was I glad to know that the initial "hawker stall" has now transformed into a restaurant of its own!

And no, Ratatouille is not just another Disney Pixar film (sorry for my Disney-ocd). Ratatouille is actually a traditional French dish, which is basically just stewed vegetables (mostly tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, aubergine, brinjal and more).

As usual, I took a picture of the menu, I love menu like this because it's so simple (love it even more when there isn't any pictures, so every dish comes out like a surprise instead of a comparison). Straightforward with no fancy schmancy names always the way to go. Sorry guys, I did not take a picture of the shopfront, but it's a corner lot so if you were to pass by Adda Height, you're not going to miss it. Like a treasure hunt, you guys go locate it yourself! (Okay la, I usually tag my location at the end of the post so you guys can click it and get the exact address.)

The interior, so unpretentious and so cozy! Firm believer in if your food is good, you don't need all that "atas-ness". And Ratatouille is exactly that. I'm still having my amazeball food withdrawal symptoms, so don't mind me.

The drinks, basically Oreo milkshake and OJ. Let's play a little game, guess which drink belongs to me and which belongs to the boyf.

The boyf is not so big on soup and never really chooses anything other than Mushroom Soup so here we are, having Ratatouille's Special Mushroom Soup. Living up to its name, the soup is indeed special. I'm not a big fan of the usual mushroom soup out there in the market, they boast of truffle mushroom etc or homemade from scratch, those never did the magic for me. I like cream based soups, chowder over anything for me or even bisque! So when I found out that Ratatouille's mushroom soup is cream based with sliced mushroom, I was over the moon. Oh, and their soup has that tint of coriander, which totally added another layer of aroma to it. My favourite mushroom soup for now!

Fries, oh my love for fries. If truffle fries is on the menu, there is a 99.99% chance that I'll be ordering it. I almost never say no to truffle fries. (though McD's shaker fries overrule every other fries but i digress again) Ratatouille's Truffle Fries did not disappoint at all, thick cuts instead of the shoestrings that you see serving out there, every bite is so full of potato and the truffle oil, oh the chef is not stingy with that at all.

My favourite of the night! Ratatouille Pasta! Honestly I was a bit hesitant about it when it first arrived in front of me, I mean I'm not a veggie person. I avoid eating my greens whenever I can. I am in mid twenties right now, and I still have my daddy nagging me to eat my vegetables at every meal, and that is exactly how much I love my vegetables. BUT BUT BUT, the ratatouille had me at the first bite. The sauce is oh my god. On the scale of 1 to 10, I'm rating it "oh my god". The sauce is made from scratch, using fresh and juicy tomatoes (according to the chef) and I totally buy it. It's no Prego or whatever sauce or puree that you find in the supermarket. So tomato-ey (if there's such a word) and blends in so well with the vegetables. The brinjal (or eggplant that most call it) is the bomb, so sweet and so juicy, if you think brinjal is best eaten with "fried hei bi" or salted fish, then the brinjal in the ratatouille is going to bring a whole new level to your taste buds. You probably think I'm exaggerating, and I myself am appalled with what I just wrote, but trust me, give it a try. And then come tell me I'm wrong. Come.

Cottage Pie for the boyf. I love mashed potatoes and I love pie, and I love it when these two get married and have their lovechild otherwise known as cottage pie! The server informed us that the preparation time for it will be at least 20 minutes, and I did not regret waiting a single minute because this dish is so good. (Every dish I ordered that night is so good, I'm not even kidding.)

See the minced beef? Hhhomg. Though I find the mash a little salty to be eaten on its own, but once it enters your mouth with the beef and the gravy, it was like a holy matrimony. (wtf have I just written) Well the only negative about this dish is that it gets a little too full too soon (probably the carbs from the potatoes) so I would suggest getting this dish to share and maybe order another main dish.

I'm definitely going back for more, and I'm so bringing my family along the next time. The Oxtail Stew is a crowd favourite (saw so many tables ordering it) so it's definitely next on my list, especially after reading JohorKaki's review on it. Oh and lamb shank too! Would love for my dad to try that, he's a fan of shank wtf.
